How accurate are bathroom scales?

For more consistent readings, place the scales on a stable, level surface and use them in the same position each time. Some are made for hard floors, while others may work on suitable carpet or include separate carpet feet.

Your weight can also change throughout the day. Comparing readings taken under similar conditions can give you a more useful view of change over time than comparing individual measurements taken at different times or in different places.

If the scales have been moved, stored upright or fitted with a new battery, check the instructions to see whether they need to be re-calibrated or reset before use.

What is the difference between weight-only and body-composition scales?

Weight-only scales measure body weight. Body-composition or analyser scales may also estimate metrics such as body fat, muscle mass, body water, visceral fat or BMI.

These additional figures are estimates rather than direct medical measurements. The metrics included differ between models, so check the item details if there is a particular measurement you want to follow.

Apps, profiles and household use

Some smart scales support several user profiles, allowing different people to record their measurements. How users are recognised, separated and shown in the app depends on the model and its companion service.

If several people are likely to use the scales, separate profiles and controls for assigning or deleting readings can help keep each person’s history accurate.

Maximum weight and platform size

Maximum capacity varies considerably between bathroom scales. Check the stated weight limit for each product.

Platform width and display position can matter too. A wider platform may provide more room to stand, while a display that remains visible around your feet may make the result easier to read.

Can bathroom scales be used with a pacemaker or implanted device?

Check the safety guidance for the individual model before use. Body-composition scales can use a small electrical signal to estimate different measurements and may not be suitable for people with a pacemaker, implanted cardiac device or certain other medical devices.

Can bathroom scales be used to weigh luggage or pets?

Bathroom scales are designed primarily for weighing people. It's possible to estimate another weight by weighing yourself first and then repeating the measurement while holding the item or pet.

This method may be limited by the scales’ maximum capacity, minimum activation weight and measurement increments. For small or precise measurements, use the appropriate equipment, like travel scales.
