What is the standard washing machine size?
Most freestanding washing machines in the UK are roughly 85cm tall, 60cm wide, and 55-60cm deep, and most modern kitchen designs will leave gaps this size to make sure any appliances you have slot neatly into place. However, it’s worth double checking with a tape measure just to make sure.
Are washing machines, tumble dryers and washer dryers all the same size?
Yes! All three appliances share the same identical dimensions (85cm tall, 60cm wide and 55-60cm deep), so any of them can fit into those gaps under your kitchen counters like a glove.
Can I handle installing a washing machine myself?
If you’re replacing an old machine, it's usually a relatively straightforward job that you can do yourself, provided the existing plumbing is still working as it should. But if you're moving into a new house and starting from scratch, it's worth getting someone in to make sure your new machine is plumbed in correctly. Be sure to keep an eye out for our Home Delivery, Installation and Recycling services on selected models, so we can handle the hard work from start to finish.
How do I keep my laundry appliances clean?
A little care every now and then helps out a lot when it comes to keeping your appliances in good working order. For a washing machine, run an empty hot wash and be sure to wipe around the rubber door seal after every few months, give the detergent drawer a rinse and leave the door open between washes to let it air out.
When it comes to giving the tumble dryer some TLC, make sure you clear the lint filter after every cycle and vacuum out the filter slot monthly. If you're cleaning a vented model, disconnect and vacuum the exterior duct hose once a year to prevent fire hazards, and if you're using a condenser or heat pump model, make sure you empty the water drawer and clean of the bottom condenser unit regularly.
For a washer dryer, clean the lint filter and wipe down the rubber door seal after every few cycles to remove trapped fuzz, water residue and any bits and bobs someone might have left in their pockets. Then, every month, run a hot wash with a washing machine cleaner to clear detergent buildup, and drain and clean the pump filter located at the bottom front panel.
