Shop all fridge freezersWhether a fridge freezer is right for your needs depends largely on the size of your household. A fridge freezer that can hold 200 litres can fit approximately 11 bags of food shopping inside, making it perfect for a smaller household. For medium sized families, look for models with a capacity of around 400 litres.
50/50, 60/40 or 70/30? Another key factor to consider is the ratio of fridge to freezer you'll need. Most models of fridge freezer are split 60/40, with more space given to the refrigeration compartment than the freezer. If you want more room for storing frozen goods then go for a model with a 50/50 split.
Make sure the doors of your fridge freezer open the way that's most convenient for you to use. Most models include removable hinges that allow for a left or right opening. This gives you the freedom to place your fridge freezer in almost any position, regardless of your kitchen or utility room layout.
The most popular type, these models come in a variety of sizes and styles. They can be placed anywhere there's a power socket, making them the most flexible choice. A standard freestanding fridge freezer is typically 60cm wide, though you can also find slimline and under counter versions for smaller spaces.
If you don’t like your appliances being on show, then an integrated fridge freezer might be for you. These models are designed to fit inside a standard 60cm-wide cupboard, so when the cupboard door is closed, you won't see the fridge freezer. They are usually more expensive than freestanding models, but give a much cleaner and sleeker look.
These models are almost twice the size of a standard fridge freezer, making them perfect for larger families. For easy access, they are often split vertically, with one side being a fridge area and the other a freezer compartment. Some American fridge freezers also have ice and water dispensers built-in for instant refreshment.
Some models of fridge freezer won’t work when the exterior temperature is too cold, so if you are planning on keeping one in an unheated garage or outbuilding, look for a model that can specifically handle colder climates. These fridge freezers often have special frost protection, which allows them to safely operate in temperatures as low as -15°C.
We've estimated how large a fridge needs to be for different-sized families below. If you're buying a fridge-freezer, it's best to prioritise getting a fridge compartment that's the right size, even if that leaves you with less freezer space.
Top freezers are generally considered more energy efficient than bottom freezers. They usually have less space and storage options but frozen food is easier to access.
The majority of people opt for a freezer compartment on the bottom as it’s less frequently used. Having the fridge on top also keeps fresh food at eye level, so you can easily grab it.
If you can't find the right balance of space in a fridge freezer, you should consider buying a separate small fridge, cooler or chest freezer.
