Introduction to Ladies' hair removal

Hair removal has become an essential part of the female lifestyle. Over the past few years hair removal products have become more advanced to allow even longer periods between hair growth.

Your chosen hair removal method will very much depend on your own personal preference as there are plenty of different products to help you stay smooth and hair-free for as long as you want.

Perhaps the most commonly used, short-term method of hair removal, is shaving, but there are other longer lasting techniques, including waxing, epilators, intense pulsed light and laser hair removal.

Our guide explains the main benefits and advantages of these different methods of hair removal.

ShavingShaving

Shaving is a short-term method, removing hair at surface level.

There are two different ways of shaving:

  • Wet shaving - with water and a lubricating foam, gel or oil
  • Ladies electric shavers - safer and won't result in unsightly cuts. Look out for Ladies electric shavers that can be used both wet and dry.

Pros: Quick and easy, most can be used on wet or dry skin
Cons:
Short term solution, has to be repeated often as hair grows back rather quickly for most people, can also result in cuts or rashes for those with sensitive skin

Trimming and groomingTrimming and grooming

Ladies trimmers allow for tidying and grooming of body hair, for areas that require gently trimming rather than complete hair removal.

These can be used on even the most delicate areas, but do ensure you purchase an electrical item that is specifically designed for the intended area.

Pros: Good for trimming and tidying
Cons: A separate solution is needed for complete hair removal

WaxingWaxing

Waxing is another popular form of hair removal. It involves applying a wax substance, which can be made of natural products, to the skin and then rubbing a cloth strip over the area. The cloth is then ripped off, removing the hair follicle with it.

Pros: Does small or large areas, long lasting, re-growth takes up to 3 weeks,
repeated waxing weakens the hair and future re-growth is reduced
Cons: Can be painful and result in short-term skin irritation

EpilatingEpilating

Epilating is effective and long-lasting. Epilators glide over the skin, using between 20 and 40 tweezers to remove the hair from the root quickly and effectively.

Pros: Should be long-lasting, re-growth takes up to 3 weeks and repeated use should ensure future re-growth is finer and less dense
Cons: Can be painful on sensitive skin

Additional features on some models include:

  • Bath or shower use - this can be kinder to the skin, check out models specifically designed for underwater use.
  • Pre-epilating wipes - these help prime the skin before use
  • High frequency massage rollers - these glide smoothly across the skin, gently stimulating it to reduce any discomfort

Laser hair removal / Intense Pulsed LightLaser hair removal / Intense Pulsed Light

Using the same cutting-edge technology as used in professional hair removal clinics, Laser hair removal and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices emit light energy which stuns the follicle and suppresses hair re-growth.

Pros: Long lasting, re-growth takes up to 12 weeks, practically painless with a little prickling or slight burning sensation at most.
Cons: Can be more expensive than other methods of hair removal, not suitable for all hair and skin colours.
