Once your child is able to crawl, we recommend fixing a stair gate at the top and bottom of your stairs.
Stair gate for top of stairs
Keeps your child safe from falling down the stairs.
Screw fit or retractable stair gates are best here as they don't have a bottom bar which can be a trip hazard.
Stair gate for bottom of stairs
Stops toddlers and pets from climbing up tempting staircases.
Screw fit, pressure fit and retractable stair gates are all suitable styles for the bottom of the stairs.
Safety gates can also be used to block access to certain rooms where there may be hazards, such as your kitchen or utility area.
2-way safety gates work well between rooms, so you can open from either direction.
Wide safety gates
If you have a wide staircase or doorframe, of more than 80cm, look for extra wide or extendable safety gates.
For some standard gates you can also buy extension kits.
Narrow safety gates
If your space is less than 74cm wide you'll need a narrow or extendable safety gate that can be made smaller.
Tall safety gates
Standard gates are usually around 74cm tall, but gates up to 100cm high are available and useful for toddlers or larger pets.
Pressure fit safety gate Shop pressure fit safety gates
A u-shaped frame is fixed by pressure of the fittings against your wall or doorframe.
Why they're great:
- Easy to install.
- No drilling required.
- Won't leave holes or marks when removed.
- They have a frame, making them unsuitable for the top of the stairs.
Screw fit safety gate Shop screw fit safety gates
Attached to fittings that are screwed into your wall or doorframe. The gate does not have a frame or bottom bar.
Why they're great:
- Very strong.
- They can be used at the top of the stairs as they have no bottom bar.
- The fittings will leave holes in the wall or door frame when removed.
Travel stair gates
These lightweight and portable gates are ideal if you are going on holiday, or if you have children or pets visiting your home for a short period of time.
Top features to consider
Retractable stair gates
Usually made of a mesh or from panels, these retract or concertina into themselves when not in use. They don't have a frame and are a more discrete style, but the fittings will usually need to be screwed into the wall.
For extra peace of mind, these safety gates automatically close behind you and are particularly useful if you have older children.
A standard now for most gates, these have an easy opening and locking mechanism that can be used with one hand - useful if you're carrying baby.
These can open in both directions, and are useful for gates that divide rooms. Many also have a stopper, so they can be locked to open only one way for use on stairs.
Available on some pressure fit safety gates, these models tell you when you have installed the gate securely with the correct level of pressure.
Colour and finish
There are a number of styles available in different wood and colour finishes, so you can match the gate to your home decor.
