Does job
I bought this as my old kettle was leaking. Needed something cheap as currently unepolyed. It fitted the bill and does the job. The metal outside gets warm so be careful to touch just the black plastic handle when picking it up.

Great Kettle, Looks Good and Works Perfectly
Great buy and very good price point, has a large capacity, the illumination light is easy to see, and lets you know it's on and working. Boiling time is average. It's exactly what I wanted; I would recommend this product.

Hello Marie,
After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Cookworks Illuminated Kettle - Brushed Stainless Steel: If you are referring to the rod located at the back of the kettle by the handle this is the steam pipe. It is to direct steam to a biometric strip thermostat which automatically switches the kettle off when the water boils.

The kettle does not have control over how loud it is when boiling. The noise it makes when boiling is set...unfortunately does not have a volume control on it like a television. Some other kettles do though.
