While you can, the handles are only designed to be use when it's one way up. Turning it over will result in it being harder to pick up without the need to slide it to an edge.

The block is Stain, odour resistant and Scratch resistant. This is block is not heat resistant. Hot items like pots and pans just removed from the stove or oven can scorch the wood.

Technically speaking its not wood, Bamboo is a giant grass. Its not veneered its constructed of small rectangular segments of solid bonded Bamboo and is extremely durable.

Can't tell if it is bits of wood or a veneer-it is so well bonded together I really can't tell-very heavy (which means it doesn't move around the table when being used) but the design on the wood makes it appear like lots of tiny bits of wood bonded together-can't even tell from the surface texture-sorry I can't be more helpful.
