The set includes an area where the ants can dig tunnels, a botany module for observing them above the ground and a section dedicated to understanding how they feed. An integrated activity table includes three environments and all the instruments for optimally observing ant life. The modules are connected to each other by a transparent tube through which the ants can easily move between the various environments.

Ant city set
Bought for my granddaughter BUT I did not realise live ants had to be used so I put it into toy donate box in my local supermarket as I was not happy to collect live ants

Highly entertaining
So this is called an ‘Ant City’. However, it has no skyscrapers, metro, cathedrals, or shopping centres that you would normally associate with a City. It's probably more of an Ant Village. But that's OK... who wants a whole city of ants in their house anyway? Having cleared up the question of metropolitan scale, let’s turn to practicalities…. It is easy to put together…? Yes, maybe too easy. Does it look good…? Oh yes, amazing! Is it fun…? Oh yes! But read on… Does it hold ants…? Well this is where it begins to get interesting… the answer is ‘yes’, but also sometimes ‘no’. Now you’re probably smart and thought about this already (I hadn’t)… but it turns out ants are very small and extremely fast. Therefore, catching them in the first place and dealing with any ‘containment breach’ is no easy job. You either have to order ants online or catch them in the garden. Obviously the garden is the more direct – and cheaper – option. You have to catch ants from the same colony or apparently they will fight (hard to verify this as I have no idea what ant fighting looks like). The supplied tube with a bit of fruit peel and sugar works well to entice them in. It seems my garden has incredibly skinny ants (hopefully you will find a fatter variety). We caught about six and put them in their new home. All seemed to be going well until I got up the following morning and found them all partying on the kitchen table. They had been able to crawl through the small ventilation holes. By no means were they making a full run for freedom, they were happily going in and out of their new home, presumably retrieving pieces of my son’s partially-eaten donut. Despite no obvious malice on the part of the ants, it was time to return them to their home and tape up the ventilation holes. One or two came back later on, clearly having been on a more distant foraging mission. No big deal, if you have skinny ants like us then tape up the holes (like with a lot of tape, as I mentioned earlier, it turns out ants are very small, especially the skinny ones). Then my son pulled out one of the tubes and just left it for a few hours “son, why are there ants running all over the kitchen?”, “probably because I pulled the tube out this morning”. Major breach! Tubes are now superglued into their holders. City finally secure! This was a seventh birthday present for my son, it’s a lot of fun. Definitely worth making sure that all holes are plugged and all tubes are secure but otherwise I highly recommend this product!
