All we know for certain about Saint Valentine of Rome, is that he was martyred on 14 February in the 3rd century. Sources contradict each other. Some tell different versions of how he was executed for refusing to renounce his faith. Others say he was imprisoned for joining soldiers and Christians in marriage, when the former were forbidden to do so and the latter were being persecuted. Before his execution he befriended the judge’s daughter, leaving her a letter signed “Your Valentine”.
