I bought this for an upcoming camper van trip with friends. I have yet to unpack it, but if the comments from other people are accurate, I think it will make a huge difference to my trip!

Fantastic bit of kit
I bought this as couldn't be bothered to set up a tentbox living pod all the time and it was recommended. Beyond easy to put up, move about and peg down. It's nice and spacious with netting on all opening and can close for privacy which I did to get changed. I didn't use the pegs that are supplied as used rock pegs due to where we were so not sure on those but either way probably one of the best things we've bought for camping

Good size tent but came with scratched poles
I put this up the day I collected it. I was doing it alone so it took me about 40 mins. The set up is fairly straight forward. However, the poles and metal connections were really scratched. I wonder if I was sold annex display or a returned tent. I haven’t tested it yet to be able to comment on ventilation and waterproofing.

Hello Matt,
Thank you for reaching out to our Q&A service regarding your equipment.
To answer your question, the Freestanding 6-Person Living Area cannot be physically attached or zipped onto the Arpenaz 6.3 tent to create a fully sealed, seamless additional room. While both items are part of the Arpenaz line, the Arpenaz 6.3 is a tunnel tent and the Freestanding Living Area is designed as an independent, standalone shelter.
However, you can still use them together to expand your campsite layout using the following methods:
Using Them Together (The "Butt-Up" Method)
Many campers pitch these units side-by-side by backing the entrance awning of the Arpenaz 6.3 up to one of the large doors of the Living Area. While this effectively doubles your sheltered communal space, please note that it is not fully weatherproof. Because there is no airtight connection, rain and wind may still enter through the gap between the two structures.
Alternatives for a Sealed Extension
If you require a weatherproof extension attached directly to your tent, we recommend the following options:
- For an Extra Sleeping Room: The Arpenaz 6.3 Extra Bedroom inner tent clips directly inside your existing tent shell to provide additional sleeping berths.
- For a Seamless Front Extension: The Arpenaz Fresh Camping Awning/Canopy is specifically designed to overlap and strap onto the poles of tunnel tents like the 6.3. This creates a stable, continuous extension to protect your main entrance from sun and rain.
I hope this information helps with your campsite preparation.
Hello TV,
Yes, it can be put up by just 1 person, but it requires a bit of patience and strategy the first few times. Thank you for using Q&A!
Hello Lou,
Yes, it is not fully sealable. Thank you for using Q&A!
Hello John,
The short answer is yes, you can absolutely use the Decathlon Quechua Arpenaz Base M for your van. Many van lifers and micro-camper owners choose this model as a cost-effective alternative to a dedicated drive-away awning.
Here is how it would work for your setup:
The Benefits: Easy Access
The tent features three large zippered doors, which suits your plan perfectly. You can park your van’s sliding door right up against one of the tent openings to walk directly into the shelter. Since the tent is freestanding, you can simply zip the door closed and drive away for the day without needing to take the structure down.
The Consideration: The "Weather Gap"
Unlike a purpose-built awning, this shelter does not have a connecting tunnel or cowl to attach to your van's roof. This means there will be a small physical gap between the tent and your vehicle. In heavy rain, water may run off the van roof into this gap.
How to Bridge the Gap:
Many campers use these simple DIY solutions to stay dry:
- Canopy Overlap: Position the tent so that the van door opens slightly under the tent’s door flap.
- Tarp and Magnets: Use a small waterproof tarp secured with rubber-coated magnets to the van roof and clamped to the tent poles to create an improvised rain tunnel.
If you are looking for a budget-friendly, breathable space that allows you to drive away easily, this is a brilliant option—just keep a tarp handy for the British weather!

Hello Wafs,
Thank you for contacting us with your question.
You can certainly set up the Quechua Arpenaz Base M on a patio. As a freestanding structure, the tension from the fiberglass poles maintains its shape without the need for ground pegs.
However, because the structure stands 2.15 meters tall with vertical walls, it is susceptible to wind. To safely secure it on a hard surface, we recommend the following:
- Use Weights: Place heavy sandbags or gazebo weights (at least 15–20kg per corner) inside the living area on top of the groundsheet loops.
- Anchor Guy Ropes: Tie the guy lines to sturdy fixtures like heavy patio furniture, a fence, or weighted blocks to prevent the top from collapsing in a breeze.
- Protect the Groundsheet: To prevent the abrasive patio surface from puncturing the fabric, we suggest placing a tarp or outdoor rug underneath the structure.
Please note that this product is designed for temporary camping use (approximately four weeks per year) rather than as permanent garden furniture. Long-term exposure to UV rays may degrade the waterproof coating and fabric.

Hello Ct,
Thank you for using our Q&A service regarding the Decathlon Freestanding 6-Person Camping Living Area (Quechua Arpenaz Base M).
The Arpenaz Base M is officially rated to withstand wind speeds up to Force 6 on the Beaufort scale, which is approximately 50 km/h (31 mph). However, it is important to distinguish between sustained winds and sharp gusts:
- Sustained Winds (up to 30 mph): The tent can handle these conditions comfortably if pitched correctly with all guy ropes tightly deployed.
- Max Wind Gust Limit: In real-world conditions, the flexible fiberglass poles may deform, flatten, or risk snapping if subjected to gusts exceeding 35 to 40 mph.
Due to its high, square profile (2.15 meters) and permanent mesh ventilation, this structure can catch the wind more aggressively than a low-profile sleeping tent. To maximize stability in high winds, we recommend the following:
- Keep Main Doors Zipped: Leaving doors open can create a "parachute effect," allowing wind to lift the fabric and pull pegs from the ground.
- Angle the Corners: Ensure guy ropes are pegged at a 45-degree angle from the corners to distribute tension evenly across the frame.
- Use a Windbreak: If possible, position a vehicle on the windward side of the living area to help block heavy gusts.
We hope this information helps you stay safe and comfortable during your next trip.
Hello Nim,
Regarding your question, this model is not a pop-up tent. Due to its size and 2.15 m height, it utilizes a traditional fiberglass pole assembly.
How Setup Works:
- Assembly: Slide two long, flexible fiberglass poles through the fabric sleeves on the roof to form an "X" shape.
- Structure: Bend the poles into place to tension the structure upright.
- Finishing: Clip the sides to the poles, hook in the included groundsheet, and peg the shelter down.
While it is not an instant pop-up, the structure is freestanding. This allows you to easily move the assembled shelter around your campsite to find the perfect spot before final pegging. Decathlon recommends two people for the easiest setup, which typically takes about 10 minutes.
Thank you for using our Q&A service
Hello MOB,
Technically yes, but it is not recommended as a primary sleeping tent.
The Decathlon Freestanding 6-Person Camping Living Area (Arpenaz Base M) is designed as a single-skin social hub, gazebo, or kitchen shelter. While it includes a fully sewn-in groundsheet and mosquito nets, sleeping inside it presents several comfort and safety drawbacks:
- Severe Condensation: As a single-skin structure without a separate inner bedroom, moisture from your breath will condense on the outer walls, which may result in water dripping onto your sleeping bag.
- No Light Blocking: This living area is designed to maximize daylight. Unlike standard tents with darkened bedrooms, the large doors and windows mean the sunrise will likely wake you early.
- Temperature Control: The three large mosquito mesh panels provide significant ventilation, making it draftier and colder at night than a double-walled sleeping tent.
Pro-Tip: The "Tent-in-a-Tent" Method
If you prefer the 2.15 m headroom and extra space, many campers use this unit as an outer shell and pitch a small 2-person or 3-person pop-up tent inside. This creates a double-walled, warm bedroom while leaving you a dry "porch" area to stand up, change clothes, or store gear.
