Bought this Garmin 53 Drive UK&ROI maps 3weeks ago. Very pleased with the screen definition and brightness. I have been using a Nuvi 55 since 2016 which is still going well but decided to upgrade to a newer version. Will keep the Nuvi55 in reserve. I find the Garmins to be first class in operation and map updates. I can recommend the brand based on my experience.

A great satnav, I did have a TomTom but this is better. took some time to set up and down load the app.Good clear directions. Traffic updates and speed cameras are great. I am delighted with it.

Seems straightforward to use
My first sat nav was a Garmin nuvi 1300 I bought in 2011 and had been using ever since. Obviously a lot of roads have changed in the last 15 years so I decided it was time for a new model. I chose the Garmin Drive 53 because it looked very similar to the nuvi, and it seems to work in much the same way

Really pleased with the purchase. Used it regularly screen clear and bright and easy to see. Directions clear and precise. Easy to locate safely. Has all features i need.

Good device battery out of date
The satnav works well as long as you remember to always 'start new journey' if you enter new coordinates before arriving at a current destination otherwise the existing destination is honoured and confusion reigns. The item I purchased had a battery about 14 months old so although the price for the satnav was reduced it was probably on the shelf for over a year rendering the battery useless. I obtained a new battery from amazon which cost about £15 and fitted easily so now I'm ready to go.

Great little unit
Wow I love this satnav, I was getting annoyed with using the mobile every time and yes it worked fine but this Garmin is the bees knees its loaded with so much tech information like, medical places, local attractions, places to visit, speed cameras, load up a A to Z route if touring, it tells you the speed you are travelling at, tells you when a speed limit alters wit at least a good 1/2 mile notice, the driving instructions are well notified such as next turns or roundabouts which like me towing gives you plenty notice, putting addresses in are a tad awkward sometimes if you don't have the full information but it does give you multiple options its rechargeable which is great but I leave mine hooked up to car usb. You don't have to actually programme a route too just use the map feature and it will advice you of speeds in front and cameras too.

1. It can function without one, but we strongly recommend investing in one, as the maps can be large, and you can run into issues without the extra storage space.
2. I can't say unfortunately, we update our devices whenever we identify a problem that requires one. Best practice would be to check for updates once or twice a month to make sure it's all updated.
3. To ensure reliability, we would recommend updating using our computer application, Garmin Express. You can update over WiFi, but may run into issues if the WiFi connection isn't strong enough, or cuts out, even if only for a couple of seconds.
