NBA 2K26: Fun on court... Frustration off it
I bought the latest entry in the NBA 2K franchise and I was hoping for improvements to the original. Sadly, I have to admit that this entry is a bit of a "game of two halves". Firstly, the positives. The gameplay is an improvement on previous entries where people like myself who aren't as good at the controls as more advanced players can get a positive experience. I primarily play the MyTeam modes and it's great to see that 2K have opened up more modes to single player with Salary Cap joining the traditional modes such Domination, Clutch Time and Triple Threat, offering people who aren't as proficient as the hardcore players a chance to progress and get new players. There are more Challenges available through gameplay to enable players to obtain the "MT" tokens necessary to improve their squads. In addition to this, there are specific events during the season such as the recent All Star Event and the current College event for "No Money Spent" players like myself to build their squads. The game makes full use of the graphics to show the players and environment to great effect. There are fewer instances of players being dropped in who look more like a random build than the player on the card. Now for the negatives and I have to start with the monetisation of the game. The price of the game when I first bought it is on par with PS5 games in general, which is annoying when 2K primarily aimed the game to people who had the means to pay the, in my opinion, exorbitant prices for the "VC" to have a vague chance of getting a decent squad when the game was originally released. This effectively places modes such as "King Of The Court" and even "Triple Threat Online" out of reach to the "No Money Spent" player like myself. It's good to see that 2K have done a little bit of a course correct over the last couple of months to offer gameplay which enable players to get some iconic additions to their squads such as the recent "Greatness" event. However, this leads to my second issue "grinding" for content. To get the, admittedly excellent, new additions from the "Greatness" event, I had to spend approximately three weeks of available free time to progress to gain all of the rewards which was monotonous due to the need to repeat challenges to progress on the challenge... and I consider myself as somebody who loves to play NBA 2K. But there needs to be variety or this game will have a short shelf-life for the player. All in all, there have been improvements to the overall franchise such as the gameplay and immersive experience of the game, but these improvements have been negated by the monetisation and over-repetitive nature of "grinding" to get a decent squad together.
