Smaller and tighter than expected
Purchased this for one of the grand kids prior to a beach holiday, with swimming and canoeing on the schedule. A bit tight fitting. The sizing information could have been better described (ie age, chest size, etc). Also maybe what the 25/40kg refers to. I assume weight range of user. However it did the job, giving reassurance for the child to swim and use the dinghy in the sea safely. I was able to tether the product to the dinghy, ensuring if she fell out she could make her way back or be pulled in. Would of been four stars but for the size information.

Hello Robyn,
The short answer is: Probably not yet, unless they are significantly heavier than average for their age.
Here is why, along with what you should look out for:
1. The Weight Reality Check
Buoyancy aids and life jackets are sized strictly by body weight rather than age, because the foam inside needs to support a specific mass to keep the wearer afloat.
- The Vest's Range: 25 kg to 40 kg (approx. 55 lbs to 88 lbs)
- The Average 7-Year-Old: The average weight for a 7-year-old child is around 22 kg to 24 kg (approx. 48 lbs to 53 lbs)
Unless your child is in a higher percentile for their age, they will likely weigh less than the 25 kg minimum required for this vest.
2. Why "Close Enough" Isn't Safe
It is tempting to buy a size up so they can "grow into it," but with water safety, this is dangerous:
- The "Slip-Out" Risk: If the child is under 25 kg, the vest will be too loose. Even with the crotch strap tightened, a loose buoyancy aid can ride up over their chin and ears in the water, or they could slip right out of it.
- Inadequate Snugness: The adjustable three-buckle system on the Decathlon BA 50N needs to pull flush against their chest and torso to work effectively.
3. Safety Warning for Younger Children
Keep in mind that this is a 50N buoyancy aid, not a life jacket.
- Important Distinction: A buoyancy aid (50N) is only designed for conscious, active swimmers in sheltered waters where help is close by. It will not roll an unconscious person onto their back. For younger children or non-swimmers, a 100N life jacket (which features a large collar to keep the head face-up) is highly recommended.
How to Check Before You Buy
The best first step is to check your child's current weight:
- If they are under 25 kg: Look for a toddler/youth life jacket rated for the 15–30 kg weight range.
- If they are 25 kg or over: This vest will fit well. Just make sure to adjust the three buckles and always use the included crotch strap.
