It's a water filter jug. It fulfils the purpose for which it was made. I am not sure if it's supposed to tell when the filter needs changing but I am happy with it as it is.

An excellent water filter jug by Brita. You'll notice the difference in the taste of the water you drink straight away. If you decide to fill your kettle with the filtered water,you'll be shocked at how good the tea tastes;and looks. This is my 4th jug,and i can't recommend it highly enough.

Bought approximately 2 months ago, my tap water tastes better, and it’s very easy to use, only negative i would give is that the replacement cartridges are quite expensive

After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the BRITA Marella Water Filter Jug Blue 2.4L: In order for the cartridge to perform effectively all contents need to be fully hydrated with water and any air bubbles need to be released. In order to do this please follow the below steps.
-Wash the jug thoroughly, taking care not to get water on the electronic indicator.
- Half fill your kitchen sink or a deep bowl with cold water and no detergent.
-Give the cartridge a good shake from side to side under water to remove any excess air.
- Remove cartridge from water and firmly insert into jug funnel.
-Fill the funnel with cold tap water and allow to filter through, discard the filtered water.
-Repeat last step
- Reset electronic indicator on top of jug – please see next page for indicator types.
- Your water is now ready to enjoy.
