Having checked to see, they're not quite U-shaped though they're fairly close to that. The back side of them is only slightly longer than the front (overall length 20cm) as it has a flattened part at the end where you screw them into the wall.

The screw heads are not covered, however, it is possible to buy plastic caps to cover the heads. Also please look through the reviews to see whether others have experienced this and what their overall feeling is with the Holdbacks.
