You are correct in that you cannot pair the ring chime with a blink doorbell!
I purchased the blink and took up the invite to purchase the ring chime and also on checking the ring is incompatible. The staff said they would flag it but this is still on the website today the 28th Oct 2025, now I got to take it back.

You dont need a subscription however there might be limitations on certain functions.

While the doorbell offers features like Live View, Motion Alerts, and Two-Way Audio without a subscription, it requires a Sync Module 2 and a USB flash drive for local storage of motion clips.

Without a subscription, you wont have access to cloud storage for recorded clips or other advanced features like person detection. Ie it will alert and record if you have flash drive inserted only when bell pressed
