Does the job but with some caveats

I bought this external dvd drive because the one of my old iMac had stopped working. I got the silver version and it matches very well the Mac aesthetics. It feels a bit flimsy though, especially when the disk drawer is out. Plugging/unpluging the dvd on it must be done with some care and I don’t know how long this drive will last. It’s a plug and play device so Installation is a breeze. Some important points for Mac users: 1) this drive comes with a dual usb cable. Whereas when used on a PC it’s enough to plug in only one usb terminal, on a Mac you have to plug in both and this means loosing 2 usb ports which on Macs are notoriously scarce. More importantly, if you plan to use it with a MacBook you will need one with 2 usb ports next to each other as the dual ending cable is too short to reach on both sides of the laptop - you will need to add an usb cable extension for that. 2) the button to open the dvd drawer doesn’t work with a Mac, once inserted a disk to pull it out you need to drag the disk icon into the recycle bin. 3) the drive does not work at all with a virtual image and for booting from a system disk.

Bought this 3 weeks ago to use on my PC, which came without a disc drive. Easy to setup, works well, use of plastic to keep price low requires a bit of care, but performance for price is really good

Very Good Service from Argos provided the goods

I bought this when my old DVD Writer failed just before it was needed to support a high profile public event. A quick scan, Argos had one, ordered, collected and was up and running in time to complete rehearsals.

New CD reader to transfer old disc to new compute.

Works a treat read a old disc i had with triumph tiger 800Xrx all tec stuff on was well please for me to print pages off. Will now be able to play all my old music as well. Was a good price for what it does.

What's you'd expect, from a known brand

Both to replace an old external DVD reader that stopped working. Works well and rips swiftly. Only 4 stars as it's too early to know if it will go the distance

A drive that actually does what it’s supposed to

I bought the Asus ZenDrive U9M to use with my MacBook Pro, after buying a couple of cheaper drives from Amazon which both failed. To my relief the Asus fired up first time and has proved to be very reliable every time I use it. The drive comes with a USB-C cable (as well as the A-type cable) so that I don’t need an adapter for my Mac which is good. The build quality is good, and the unit doesn’t feel too light or flimsy. Obviously care should be taken when the tray is out, but it certainly feels better than the cheaper drives. Apart from playing back DVD’s from it on my Mac, I’ve used it to burn my disks, and it does the job perfectly well. So, if you want an external drive that actually works, then I recommend spending a few more pounds on this one.
