Customers Say
The compost bin is generally easy to assemble and serves its purpose, but many users report issues with flimsy construction, particularly with the lid and hinges. Overall, it offers decent value for its price.

Very light
The bin comes as a flatpack, but as long as it is put together carefully and the hinged lid is kept straight (otherwise it could be easily strained and break) it does the job.

Great product
Bought this for my mum who’s a keen gardener and she was very happy , it’s a good size but not too large it’s flat packed so you have to put it together yourself but it wasn’t complicated, overall good product worth the money.

Garden composter
I bought this to store compost over winter and I feel it is a good size and stores a lot. I feel the lid could be better as it keep coming off hooks when you open it and the lid is a vital piece of the composter. This is why I only gave it three stars.

Lightweight compost bin
Easy to assemble except for hinge on lid which I gave up on and used gaffa tape instead It’s roomier than I expected and looks neat and tidy

Good idea but has problems
This is a good idea, but difficult to assemble. It works well as a composter except that the lid hinge keeps falling in two!

Composter
I bought two but one of them is coming apart. I've put a stick against it to hold it together.

Simple, easy, effective
Cheap to buy, easy to assemble and it’s a composter. Not strongly held together and bottom slider/access flap poorly designed. But great value for money, I bought 3!

Hello
We currently do not sell replacement lids.
I hope this helps
Thanks for using Q&A
In answer to my own question, Ive now had this product for over 12 months. It has never got remotely warm or composted anything. I have resorted to using it to store surplus until round one sitting next door to it has composted down enough to top up! Total waste of money since I paid thirty five pounds for it, now heavily reduced which must tell you something!
Hello there,
After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Toomax 260L Plastic Garden Composter: The shape being square and not round should not have an effect on the heat inside - the heat is more related to the colour and material used. Some heat inside helps quicker composting.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for using Q & A.
I am not sure as I don't have mine any more as it was it was a bit flimsy for me. Replaced it with the usual round one. This one is smaller so would less surface area stop it from heating up as much? The plastic may be thinner - it may lose heat quicker?
Hello Rosie,
I have spoken to our supplier who have advised as follows:
"Yes, you can confirm this Toomax 260L Plastic Garden Composter can be used as a wormary."
I hope this helps.
Thank you for using Q&A.
The drawer at the bottom bulges out as it gets fuller. I do have worms in my compost and they do not try to escape but not sure if this would be the case with the number of worms in a wormery.
60cm is slightly over 23.5 inches

Hi Primavera,
I have checked and Grass clippings.
Tree leaves.
Vegetable food scraps (coffee grounds, lettuce, potato peels, banana peels, avocado skins, etc.)
Black and white newspaper.
Printer paper.
Most disease free yard waste.
Cardboard.
Vegetarian animal manure (e.g. cows, horses, rabbits, hamsters, etc.)
There are more things if you google it you will see a list with many more items on it that are safe to compost, Hope this helps.
Thank you for using Q & A
Well my first comment about the composter is...dont buy it as its really rubbish and not worth the money.
But as your asking then you must have got it so some points to note:
1 You must wear gloves when using it as the plastic is thin and sharp and will cut you (no rounded edges with this bin )
2 You will need to support the sides and the front door as they will burst open once there is any bulk inside.
3 You will need to put a weight of some sort on top to stop the top flap from blowing away(this further encourages the sides to bow outward unfortunately).
4 You will need to put it on some bare earth to allow bugs to enter from below.
5 Keep the front clear as you will eventually have to place a couple of bricks on the front unloading door ( a potential trip hazard )
6 Leave an air gap between the shed and the composter to prevent a damp patch on the shed which will accelerate any wood rot.(plus ++ it allows you to get the rope round the composter once it starts to buckle!)
7 Do not put any cooked foods inside as this will become a haven for Rats.
8 Do not expect good compost in one season so buy a Dalek shaped one and have a two year cycle for much better compost.
9 Enjoy the garden and dont get tied up to much with being Organic sometimes you need to kill a rat !
I use primarily for leaves and grass cuttings. How one measures the organic status, I'm not sure.
Hi JM,
The composter is recommended to be placed on soil or grass as this improves the compost produced as the composter won't become waterlogged.
Thank you for using Argos Q&A.
Yes - but bin is very flimsy & easily damaged/ brittle - my advice is don’t waste your money buying it.
Hi
It will sit on concrete fine, mine is half on concrete, half on mud. But I think you’ll need to start it off with some mud or old compost so that there are worms or other beasties present.
Ideally, it should be placed on soil. I guess it will be ok on paving but any fluids won't soak away. ( I am a very amateur gardener by the way).
I don't see why not if it's in a sheltered place where it won't blow away. I considered it, but mine is on soil so that any moisture can go directly into the ground.
Hi Edward, my lid broke whilst building it like yours,my compost bin is now in the recycling bin. If it brakes whilst Im building it then once there is half a ton of garden waste inside I can imagine the sides will burst.
I never even got to put anything in it
I am asking for a refund
Hi Edward.
I would suggest perhaps weighting the lid down should you feel a risk of it blowing away during high winds however if you feel the item is faulty I would advise getting in touch with our customer service team for further assistance.
Thanks for using Argos Q&A.
I wrote a bad review on this item when I bought it. I would not buy again - suggest you take back to Argos for a refund as it is not made of robust enough material - it is not fit for purpose as is required by trading standards
I have not had any problem with the fit of the lid but I do have an old rubber mallet on it but if you are worried you could always screw the lid down on the side that doesn't open, We did have some very strong winds here in Berkshire last week and nothing got damaged/blown away
Hi Bob,
I have looked in to this for you, this is not designed to be chained. It can be put on grass.
Thanks for using Argos Q&A.
Hi Bob I would say that if you put a chain through the air holes going from side to back /front then yes but I wouldn't drill holes in the unit hope this helps
Hi Spudgam2000
I have looked into this for you and I can confirm that you cannot access the bottom.
I hope this helps :)
Thanks for Using Argos Q&A
The bin itself doesn't have a bottom so I have put mine on a large flag but it can also be put on grass. There is an opening flap at the bottom of the bin at the back and the front -about a third of the length of the bin.It slots into place and can be lifted out to get at the compost when it is mulched down.I was really surprised how easy the bin was to put together. The instructions were very clear.I needed help from my husband to tap the hinges on the top opening flap but did all the rest myself.I think this bin is functional, good value nd I recommend it.
