My wife used this after having a hip replacement. She found it great for picking up things like pens, bits of paper. She never tried picking up anything heavy with it though, so we can't really comment on that.

Thanks for your query about the Handy Reacher Grab Stick.
It has TPR jaws that grab and hold light objects firmly. It is capable of picking up small light items like socks and, with some manipulation, it may be possible to use it to get socks on up to a point. It'd depend on the length and stretchiness of the socks and other factors.
Trousers might be too large and heavy to pull up with this though.

No. You can pull it closed depending on how much resistance your window has but it wont stay gripped enough to like close the window handle but turning it. I had to gorilla tape the end of this in place as the head just spins.

The handle and trigger are made of plastic with a strong grip.
