Bought it to replace a 15-year-old Argos own brand (I believe) sewing machine as the bobbin winder was broken, and the machine developed all sorts of unusual sounds and was overall tired. This machine is just perfect!! Much quieter than the old one and very smooth. Sewing my new kitchen curtains and pelmet was a pleasure. It's got all the basic stitches and really easy to use. It's not heavy, although it's bigger than my old one. I managed to sew through 4 layers of fabric and header tape with no problem. No catching, no ripping thread. No need to rip the seams and start all over again like with the old one. It's a good starter machine but also a great domestic sewing machine if you already know what you are doing. You won't be disappointed. I think its a good purchase and very good value for money. I also have a proper singer sewing machine, but in my opinion, this one is way better for all the domestic sewing I might need.

Fab starter machine
I’ve had this a few weeks and it’s great for a basic beginners machine. It has the functions you need for simple sewing jobs like hemming and alterations. There’s no overlock stitch and the stitch lengths are pre-sets but it’s easy to use and reliable. Sometimes the backwards stitch doesn’t go over the same place which is annoying, could just be I can’t see the needle properly. There’s a storage compartment that’s quite useless as everytime you take it off everything falls out so don’t bother storing anything in it. It’s light and niffy. I love it. I got it to do basic clothing alterations myself. I I wanted to get into sewing more I’d consider a more advanced machine.

Excellent beginner machine
Just started a basic sewing course and didn't want to spend a lot so this machine fitted the bill. So far so good. Very easy to use. Enough stitch choices for me. Comes with 3 different feet attachments. Would recommend.

After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Brother LS14s Manual Stitch Sewing Machine - White: Unfortunately, the LS14s doesn’t have a whip stitch, as this is a hand sewn stitch.
However, a normal zigzag stitch will work for whipping.

I can advise that for your Brother LS14s, you'll generally use a Universal Needle in size 90/14 (or sometimes 80/12 to 100/16) as a standard.
