Gears of War: E-Day – A Return to Form
Gears of War is finally back on form! E-Day captures everything that made the original trilogy so special, delivering that gritty atmosphere, intense action and classic Gears feel we’ve been missing. It’s a brilliant return to the series’ roots, with arguably the best gameplay in the entire franchise. A proper Gears of War experience and exactly what fans have been waiting for!

Good, but not a masterpiece
** Campaign Review ** Gameplay I throughly enjoyed E-Day's campaign despite it's shortcomings. Moment-to-moment gameplay is mostly typical Gears fare but sliding and shoulder swapping are nice additions that make things smoother. Weapon crates are a nice addition letting you bounce between a variety of seapons and choose from a (slightly bloated) selection of attachments, abillities (similar to Gears 5) and armour mods. Act 1 & 2 Act 1 is a standout, and I felt like they did justice to a pivotal moment in the franchise's lore. A really tense and impressive opening. Act 2 is when the game opens up into the semi-open city of Kalona which is where it falters somewhat. I have a suspicion the devs intended the City of Kalona as a hub where you would access main and side missions, but it feels like they backtracked on it midway through due how badly Gears 5 handled that and decided to arbitrarilly block off parts of the city to save for the later visits you have there which are much more linear (that's what I suspect anyway.) That being said, Kalona is still fun, even if it's side objectives and collectibles ultimately boil down to a checklist formula. Act 3 & 4 Later acts do drag the pace of the story down, although they still manage to present the villan as a threat, and explain a little more about the new enemy the characters are facing. There have been some complaints about how some characters were handled, I feel like this was OK until Act 3 or 4, where some instances of bad writing hold back how belivable and likeable some of the main characters are. The game also waits way too long to explain one of the main character's backstories resulting it not having as much punch as it should've done, and certain characters were quite underwhelming. Voice performances and cutcenes are largely great though. Graphics In general the visuals are stunning. These are some of the best visuals of this generation with amazingly well-realised and dense environments, and a real physicallity to the characters. The common performance and graphical issues that plauge AAA UE5 titles are kept to a minimum: you might notice character hair looking a bit fuzzy sometimes or the odd stutter when moving through the open environments but by-and-large, it's impressive. Versus and Horde (breifly) Versus still feels like Gears despite it's slightly lower skill floor. It's a little easier to jump into but you should expect to have a very rough time if you're a new player. I do respect versus for largely sticking to the series arena feel rather than trying to chase trends like..certain other shooter franchises. However it has a severe lack of content with only six maps at launch and is missing popular modes like Guardian and Free-for-all, even if the new modes are quite fun. If you're just here for versus I would wait for more content and for where the player numbers land to jump in. Horde Siege plays like a mix of classic horde and the semi-open missions from campaign. You post up in locations reused from the campaign map and defend an objective while keeping your team alive. You can run into other teams and revive them, although there's no PvP. There's a solid variety of enemy types although they get stale after a while. Horde Siege is fun but can get repitive, it'll likely be where most players go once they get stomped in Versus. For anyone curious the physical version needs a download to play, campaign and practice can be played offline after download while versus and horde need an internet connection, there's 2 player split-screen in all modes, and the physical version comes with a Crimson Omen sticker. Overall the game is good, but probably not good enough to run out and buy an Xbox to play if you don't already have one. I still enjoyed my time with it, which is why I'm giving it a 4/5.

I leapt into this review without thinking about what to say... so I'll give you my impressions after just completing the campaign (28 hours): It's stunning to look at, there were several moments where I found that I had rushed through a section only to wish I'd savoured the environment. This is perhaps the most impressive game of this console generation. It was rock solid for me, I've seen people say there are some frame rate drops but I didn't notice any on my play-through. The story is harrowing to be a part of and the way the city comes to bear the scars of E Day is spectacular. This is just such a thoroughly compelling and engrossing experience with excellent pacing that keeps drawing you into the story, it doesn't stay too long or feel like a chore. Excellent game.
