The long pliable neck can be bent and shaped, the head can be angled this way and that. Switching it on and off is a doddle too, on the top of the base, centre front. The lamp can not be left in the on position. Once switched off by the timer, you would need to touch the lamp again for it to come on.

No, when you plug the lamp in it does not come on. You have to touch the button.
For most people this is fine. If you have a smart home plug, this is no use as you cant automate the light.
