The maximum wattage for each bulb in this light is 6W, so the 40W incandescent bulb is too high. A 6W LED bulb can be approximately equivalent to an old 60W incandescent bulb for brightness (depending on the lumens of the bulb), so is plenty bright enough, far more energy efficient and will last for far longer as well.
