Easy to apply with a brush and brings out the grain of the wood. Only needed one coat.

Absolutely Awful!
Although this says it's a translucent stain, I was expecting some sort of colour on the wood, else how could it be called a wood stain?? No, it's unbelievably thin and watery and even after 2 coats there was no staining and certainly nothing like the colour on the tin. If anything there was a vague hint of dirtiness. Worse than useless - avoid!

After checking with our supplier, they have advised: The product may be applied by brush or roller. If applying by brush, apply evenly, following the grain of the wood. If rollering, use a short to medium nap mohair roller. Apply multiple coats to achieve the required depth of shade. Coverage is 10.5sqm per 750ml can.

Rust-Oleum Weathered Wood Paint 750ml - Ash Grey is designed to be painted direct onto the bare wood as the ageing effect it partially down to how it stick to and interacts with the oils in wood. The apparent amount of apparent wear/age is made by the addition of more coats of paint, or not, depending on the desired effect.

Thanks for your query regarding the Rust-Oleum Weathered Wood Paint 750ml - Ash Grey.
It would depend on the type of varnish you were using so I cannot confirm with absolute accuracy, but it is possible to varnish over this. You'd need to apply the required number of coats, allowing each to dry, let it fully dry first, then sand it to prepare the surface and finally then apply the varnish.
