Very Good Steam Generator Iron
My wife needed a heavy duty steam iron and this model fits the bill perfectly. It is compact, light weight and provides ample steam to remove stubborn creases in cotton and denim. Disappointment: unreliable
Failed once after 1.5 years while it was used occasionally with a mix of tap water and demineralized water and the cleaning program was run frequently. The iron was not producing steam anymore or barely. 1.5 years later, the exact same breakdown happened and the cost to repair is not worth it. So not only the iron is not reliable, not long lasting and it is not sustainable due to a high cost to repair.

Great iron this is my second one, after five years first one gave up and I was so pleased with it I purchased the same model again.

Rubbish
Bought to replace my 18 year old Philips steam generator iron and this is not a steam generator iron. It is a basic iron with an extra large water reservoir. Have to use an ironing board as not enough steam is generated to remove creases from garments hanging in doorway. If you have only had a £10 iron from Asda you might be impressed but if you are used to leaving your ironing board to gather dust with a previous steam generator you will be disappointed with this one.

Having checked, the manual for the Philips PerfectCare Compact GC7842/46 Steam Generator Iron does advise "This appliance has been designed to be used with tap water. However, if you live in an area with hard water, fast scale build-up may occur. Therefore, it is recommended to use distilled or demineralized water to prolong the lifetime of the appliance." It is recommended to empty water when you have finished ironing.

Having checked I can see the following steps are needed:
Fill up the water tank halfway making sure that the appliance is plugged in and switched ON during the Calc-Clean process.
Place the Calc-Clean container on the ironing board or any other even, stable surface.
Place the iron stably on the Calc-Clean container.
Press and hold the CALC-CLEAN button for 2 seconds until you hear short beeps.
Note: The Calc-Clean container has been designed to collect scale particles and hot water during the
Calc-Clean process. It is perfectly safe to rest the iron on this container during the entire process.
During the Calc-Clean process, you hear short beeps and a pumping sound.
Wait approximately 2 minutes for the appliance to complete the process. When the Calc-Clean process is completed, the iron stops beeping and the CALC-CLEAN light stops flashing.
Wipe the iron with a piece of cloth and put it back on the base station.
Caution: The iron is hot.
As the Calc-Clean container becomes hot during the Calc-Clean process, wait approx. 5 minutes before you touch it. Then carry the Calc-Clean container to the sink, empty it and store it for future use.
If necessary, you can repeat steps 1 to 8. Make sure that you empty the Calc-Clean container before you start the Calc-Clean process.

Very easy, the iron starts bleeping when it needs descaling.
All you do is push the descaling button (on the base) put the plastic tray on the bottom of the iron, push the steam button and the iron will automatically clean itself. The pink light will go out when the descaling has been completed.
