After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Lava 14.5in Black Lava Lamp - Red & Clear: Yes all liquid motion lamps get hot to touch. Our lamps carry warning stickers and safe handling advise is given in the instructions.
It is the heat from the bulb, that heats the base that heats the liquid, that melts the wax and creates the ‘Lava’ flow.
Once in operation users are advised not to touch the base until they have switched the lamp of and allowed it to cool.
