Is gold really that expensive...?

I wanted to replace my gold hoop earrings which were quite old and becoming flimsy in the part that went through my ear. I was disappointed that the new ones were so much thinner than the old ones (also bought from Argos). They are so thin that I have difficulty slotting them closed and once done, they are so delicate I am anxious about catching them and breaking them.
