Hi if it's happening on both phone's it sounds like the phone socket or line connection faulty the best way to check if it's the base unit or the line is borrow another phone and try that in the socket if that works ok then you know it's the new phone hope this helps regards mark

Providing you have set up the phone to record an answer message then it will work with whatever handset you are using - ie you would not select to answer the call on handset 2 if you don't recognise the number and then the pre-recorded message will play
