All Arlo cameras require a high-speed internet connection in order to function. The Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Outdoor camera can be directly connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; optionally, it can be also synced with one of the following Arlo base station and SmartHub models (sold separately): VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540, and VMB5000. The base station or SmartHub must be in turn connected via Ethernet cable to a router.

Having checked, there are 4 different subscription plans.
No Plan - Free.
Secure Single Camera - 1 Camera, Recording Resolution 2k, Video in Secure Cloud 30 day and theft replacement.
Secure Multi Camera - All of the above, with 4 cameras.
Secure Plus - Unlimited cameras, 4k, Video in Secure Cloud 60 day, theft replacement, 12 months extra hardware warranty, VIP customer service.
This ranges from Free to £14.99 a month.
This is correct at the time of writing and is subject to change and within Arlos specified terms and conditions.

Our new Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Outdoor cameras are currently not compatible with any base stations or SmartHubs; they can only be directly connected to a 2.4. GHz Wi-Fi network. We are currently working on a solution to make the Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Outdoor cameras compatible with Arlo SmartHubs and basesStations in 2024.

The supplier has advised the following for the Arlo Essential 2 1080p 4-in-1 Wi-FI Security Camera - 2 Pack:
The camera in the link is the new Essential 2 camera.
It currently doesn’t work with the VMB4540-100EUS.
Arlo are working on a firmware update to fix the compatibility of Essential 2 cameras with this product. We expect the firmware update to be ready early December.
The Essential 2 range currently works out of the box with WIFI.

The battery life of our new Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Outdoor camera is up to 6 months with average use. Average use assumes that you are using the Optimized or Best Battery Life Power Management settings and that your camera records less than three minutes per day. Increasing the length, quality, or quantity of video recordings decreases your battery life.
