This is a great security camera for the price point, good quality video in both daylight and nighttime. Easy setup and a good app it is nice that video can be stored locally and accessed in the app without a subscription.

Excellent bit of tech

If you don't have a router, you can pair the camera to your phone's hotspot.
However, after configuration, if you want to watch the live view or manage your camera remotely, your phone's hotspot must stay on to provide the camera with a stable network connection.
This means the phone must be placed near the camera, and the hotspot cannot be turned off.

Yes, this supports IR (Infrared) Night Vision. This can auto turn on or be manually set to turn on
This does have 850nm infrared night vision which supports automatic colour filter in low light conditions with a visual distanced of up to 30 ft.

Without a subscription, you'll need to install an SD card so that videos can be recorded to it. You can view the live view and play back videos from the SD card at any time through the Tapo app, even without a subscription.

The detection feature of the camera is related to factors such as the installation position, the motion, the settings configured on the camera, etc. It is not recommended to place the camera behind glass. If the camera is installed behind glass, infrared lights may cause reflection, resulting in blurry and unclear images, thereby hindering the timely detection of moving objects, especially in nighttime scenes.

Tapo app is free to download from Google Play and the Apple App Store. It supports Android devices (version 5.0 and above) and iOS devices (version 11.0 and above), including smartphones and tablets. Requirements may change over time—please check your app store for the latest info.
Tapo app is not compatible with operating systems like macOS or Windows.
