Yes, there is a battery included. Remove the watch from the housing and then remove the "red keeper" out, which is situated at position 3 on the watch, to get it started.

You take the watch out of the surround and then lever off the back with something like a thin knife, pop the battery out and replace it. It does look an easy process.
