I have checked the extra piece is a safety collar that you can use in addition to the normal collar if you wish to for safety purposes in case the collar breaks. The actual cord is Black.

This stumped me at first.
The big button you hold down under your thumb as a temporary brake, the small button in front of it you slide forward with the tip of your thumb to lock in place.
Then you can let go of the button completely
