Budget laptop, tendency to crash hopefully solved
I bought this budget laptop to replace an old Win 10 Ideapad 3, which had started to run very slowly with its limited RAM. I have had HP in the past so was happy to try this one when a decent deal came up. I use the laptop for spreadsheets, word processing, occasional streaming and internet browsing. It also runs World Community Grid, number crunching for scientific projects in the background. The SSD boots very quickly, although not so quickly now that I've had to disable fast start up (see further below). The hard drive has twice the capacity of my old one and the laptop has twice the RAM, although I understand 8GB is now considered a minimum for simple, every day tasks. Internet browsing is now much quicker. The screen is a decent size and there is a full keyboard with number pad (something I missed in my old laptop). The keys require a bit heavier pressure than the mini USB keyboard I was using for the old laptop (after its onboard keyboard started to fail). The stereo sound from the onboard speakers is decent. There is HP software to run diagnostics and check for software updates, although sometimes it is worth going directly to HP's website for further downloads. It comes with a free trial of McAfee and, I think, M365 (I'm not using that as I managed to transfer my existing Office licence). I have had to do some extensive tailoring of settings however, to mitigate its tendencies to instability. I've had it crash on log-in, crash while streaming internet radio and just randomly crash. I've had to go look for the latest drivers for the chip set and graphics cards (which may well be the cause). I am surprised that I had to do this for a brand new laptop, which ought really to have either come with those drivers or very quickly updated itself on set up. I also updated the BIOS to the latest version and disabled fast start up, which is often thought to work badly with SSD and to cause instability. I've throttled back the World Community Grid, which to be fair can use a lot of the CPU if you let it. Finally, I ran software checks and had it fix some corrupted data, which may or may not have been contributing to instability. I'm maintaining a crash log and if performance does not improve after the driver updates, I will consider whether the laptop is right for my needs or I need to return it. However, this is a budget laptop and I got it in a sale for £249. Had it been full price I would probably have been more disappointed in its performance so far. Provided the tweaks to software that I've done improve the stability, however, I will be happy with the laptop. As with most laptops, if you want function keys to be function keys and not volume control etc., you have to go into BIOS and change the settings, but there are easy guides online for this.
