We don’t need colour printing so a monochrome laser is ideal for our occasional use -- no inkjet-typical blocked nozzles, clogged print heads, dried-out ink cartridges. The Brother 1242W is a super-compact unit which weighs a mere 4.6 kg. When fully closed, the footprint is only about the size of a shoebox. Unboxing, fitting the drum and toner units and plugging in takes about 5 minutes. [Tip] Slide the drum unit out of the printer first, insert the toner unit into the drum, then slide the paired unit back in -- it's a lot less fiddly. It’s absolutely essential to download and install the "Brother Mobile Connect" app on your smartphone prior to setup; the app walks you through the process from start to finish, and is very straightforward. Remember to note down in advance the device’s serial number from the sticker on the back of the casing, (15 characters} -- this is required for the device to be verified by Brother during setup. This printer now lives happily on our home network and will print problem-free directly from our various Chromebooks, (no setup required); or from our Android** phones using the brilliant (and free) Mopria Print Service app from the Google Play Store. ** There can be a ‘showstopper’ issue with later versions of Android OS because of a factory default setting whereby the MAC (Media Access Control) address is continuously ‘randomised’; this results in the home network being disabled from ‘seeing’ a printer. In Android, go to Settings → WiFi → [your home network] → Advanced → Privacy, and switch from "Use Randomised MAC" to "Use device MAC" for that specific network. This is needed for networks that rely on a stable MAC, such as your home router. From powering up the device, initial print page time is just 10 seconds. It’s quiet in operation, and the print quality is razor sharp Once set up, the only ‘maintenance’ consists of loading the paper input tray (!) Brother UK customer support is UK based, contactable by telephone, and staffed by actual human beings who have invariably proved to be extremely helpful. In summary, if this printer fits your use-case, it’s the gold standard -- and for just £99

The printer Is great, and has held up great so far! The limitation to mono is great as it saves on buying ink. While the cartridges are a bit dear, I don't mind the price tag as these units can hold on for THOUSANDS of pages. Also the compatibility is great! While I'm not able to connect the printer by USB to old software, I can still send the printer an email containing a PDF to print. The software provided with the printer is versatile and very simple to use - And also has options for more complicated setups. the printer is also Mopria Print compatible, meaning I can easily print stuff from my phone rather than faffing about with HP's unnecessary "Sign up to use the app" eco-system. You can also configure the ISO resolution to save on ink and energy - It also has a built-in sleep mode which can be toggled on and off. Overall, Great buy! Brother is the GOAT of printers.
