Push mower
Bought for my husband for our small garden to replace an old lawnmower. Great for small garden areas and handy to store.

Changed my life – and my thighs!
I bought the Spear & Jackson 40cm Hand Push Cylinder Lawnmower expecting just a neat lawn. What I didn’t expect was a full lifestyle overhaul. My neighbours no longer avoid eye contact; instead, they lean over the fence and compliment my stripes like I’m some kind of turf artist. It’s not just a mower – it’s a personal trainer. After one session, my legs felt like I’d climbed Everest, my arms like I’d wrestled a bear, and my Fitbit thought I’d run a marathon. Who needs the gym when you can just push this glorious contraption around your garden? The sound is also magical. No roaring petrol engines, just a gentle whizz-whizz-snippety-snip that makes me feel like I’m in a wholesome 1950s lawn-care advert. Birds actually sing along. My cat follows me like I’m some kind of lawnmower messiah. In short: I now have a perfect lawn, a Greek statue physique in progress, and the respect of everyone on my street. This mower didn’t just cut my grass – it cut out my excuses.

Great little machine
My last electric mower gave up on me so I decided to go for this manual mower. So simple to put together. Great quality. Does the job. So glad I chose this. I have a feeling it will go on for many years to come.

Perfect for flat even garden
I bought this after my cordless battery powered mower died! Very well known brand that broke a few months out of warranty, shocker. I hate having wires especially when mowing so I thought I’d give this a try and so far it’s not disappointing me. It’s easy to build, I little force required. The adjustable height on the roller allows for cutting difference. So for long grass you have a bigger gap between the rollers and the blades then lower it as you mow. Yes you do need to be physically able to use this, your body is the power. This is definitely satisfying and helps you maintain a healthy body with no plugs, cables or petrol canister required.

Great push lawnmower
I got this push lawnmower as our petrol mower has served us well over many years and needed a bit too much money spent on it for continued use. I have been very pleased with this lawnmower. It does cut longer grass but this requires more effort in pushing. I would recommend keeping the grass on the lawn reasonably short. I don't use the box on the mower to collect the cuttings as a friend told me that to leave the cuttings lying not only feeds the lawn it reduces the amount of moss. For that reason I do not use the collection box which is a bit fiddly & often results in a lot of the cuttings falling out of the box on to the lawn when removing it

Good hand mower
I wanted a hand mower to be green and get a bit of exercise. This mower works well.

Not for me
Just used this for a fourth time on a small grass area. The cut is not as neat or even as my previous electric cylinder mower and for some reason, sometimes the wheels lock. The Design/Capacity and Features fields are all 'required fields before I can submit; the Design is reasonable, the Capacity box is large and there are no Features to speak of but I'm giving these one star because regardless of these, the end result is not a tidy, very well cut lawn.

Hi Cate,
The Spear & Jackson 40cm Hand Push Cylinder Lawnmower might not be the best choice for uneven or sloped lawns. Manual push mowers like this one can be challenging to use on uneven terrain because they require more physical effort to push and maintain an even cut.
Thank you for using Q&A
Hi Madmike,
Yes, the handle on the Spear & Jackson 40cm Hand Push Cylinder Lawnmower stays in a fixed position while mowing.
Thank you for using Q&A
Hello BC,
After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Spear & Jackson 40cm Hand Push Cylinder Lawnmower: I can confirm that the lawnmower cutting height can be adjusted between 15-42mm.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for using Q & A.
Yes, with overgrown grass it struggles. It requires quite a lot effort and is time consuming too. The grass gets strangle in the wheels and need clearing in every other minute. On the other side, this lawnmower is great on small to medium length grass.
Hello Carrie,
After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Spear & Jackson 40cm Hand Push Cylinder Lawnmower: Unfortunately, it is not possible to not make stripes in the lawn either by removing the rear roller or adjusting the height of the lawnmower. Please note, that modifying the product would void the warranty.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for using Q & A.
Yes, ofcourse you can. Making stripes on the grass are done by adding an extra tool in the lawnmower or some advance lawnmovers come with built-in functionality, although this one hasn't. I hope this helps.

Instructions are included. It is easy to assemble. The problematic bit is the height of cut adjustment so I have chosen a setting that can be varied a bit throughout the year

Hi Matt,
For assistance please see the link below:

Thanks for using Q&A
Hi Rachel - the reality is the higher the bolt , the more grass is cut off the lawn because the roller is higher. The lower the roller the longer the cut
The adjustment is tricky on this machine as the bolt and three pronged nut can go into three different positions. And each of these positions has some leeway with regard to the height of the cut (i.e can be moved up and down by loosening the three pronged plastic nut.) The lowest position I use for the summer cut, the middle position I use for spring autumn cut and the top position I use for long grass. If you do move between the three levels be sure to move the washers to each level - there is a square one and a round one.
Hi Rachel
Having checked with the supplier for you I can let you know they say - the cut is the same.
The bolt is used to adjust the gap between 2 blades to make sure the grass can be cut.
Thanks for using Q & A
No the opposite Look at the distance between the black roller and the green bas of the mower You will see the gap widen as you lower the bolts meaning the grass will be left longer and reverse for shorter cut
