Spikey Goodness
I already had a Brabantia Lift-O-Matic, but needed to change the location of it, so bought a new spike instead of relocating the old spike. I concreted this spike into the ground using postcrete, it's not going anywhere. This is partly the reason why I couldn't reuse the old spike, it and the concrete are now one. If doing it this way, a big hole is required, so do factor that in. I would be wary of inserting the spike directly into soil. Potentially ok if you live somewhere with minimal wind, but for us, a secure install with concrete was needed. I could easily see the spike working loose with repeated flexing of the washing line.
