I already had a Brabantia Lift-O-Matic, but needed to change the location of it, so bought a new spike instead of relocating the old spike.
I concreted this spike into the ground using postcrete, it's not going anywhere. This is partly the reason why I couldn't reuse the old spike, it and the concrete are now one. If doing it this way, a big hole is required, so do factor that in.
I would be wary of inserting the spike directly into soil. Potentially ok if you live somewhere with minimal wind, but for us, a secure install with concrete was needed. I could easily see the spike working loose with repeated flexing of the washing line.

Needed to move the windy dry a bit further into the garden. I use post mix to ensure that it is secure due to the Scottish winds attempting to send knickers and pants into the next county!

The supplier has confirmed the Yes, the Brabantia Metal Ground Spike can go into soil. It is designed for immediate use and can be installed straight into the lawn without the need for concrete.
