Sideways down, Uniformly brown! Simple!
It does what I want it to do, makes toast, four normal sized slices at a time! It has a larger footprint than some other toasters, but it looks good and is simple to use. The lift up function is handy just to check the browning is exactly right. Initially, out of habit, I put the slices in, bottom edge down, which left the top edge failing to brown enough. Turning the slices half way through alleviated that concern. Finally, getting brain into gear, I realised a much better option was to put the slices in, sideways down, which gave a good, uniform browning. Doh! I can recommend, especially at the offer price!

This is the 2nd Toaster that I have bought from Breville - the previous one was very reliable and had a lot of use in a busy household. I was happy to replace both the toaster and kettle from this range. It looks sleek and modern, easy to clean and toasts evenly and well.

Horrible smell
I bought this toaster a couple of weeks ago. It looks great next to the matching kettle. However, it stinks ! The instructions say to use it a couple of times without bread in it. It says there will be a smell at first but 2 weeks on and used daily. It still smells.

When toasting one or two slices, they need to be placed in the right‑hand pair of slots. That side is designed to operate on its own, and the lever will not latch if the slices are put in the left‑hand slots.
Hello there Joyful, Yes, it does — the Breville Obliq has slide-out crumb trays, so cleaning up is really quick and easy.
Unfortunately, there is no way to operate the two sides of the toaster individually. The browning control is shared for both slots, so it's not possible to set separate temperatures or browning levels for each side. Both slots will toast using the same setting.

Hi Simon ! The loading handle won’t latch if you’re toasting one or two slices of bread and they’re placed in the left-hand slots, or if the toaster isn’t connected to the mains supply. For smaller batches, be sure to use the right-hand slots only.
Hi SkyeBella - The slots on this toaster should accommodate slices of Warburtons medium bread. Slot dimensions – Length = 140mm Width = 32mm Depth = 120mm.
Hi AJ, VTT997 does not fit warburtons bread.
