Fuss free Shredding
Very quiet compared to the one it replaces which although in warranty is horrendously loud and clogs for a living. This one is bigger quieter with a good box to capture the chippings . Not as finely chopped as other types but handles thick branches with ease ..Was very impressed my entire Christmas tree went through it in around 20 min no stops to unblock and no fuss .

Highly recommend
I got this about a fortnight ago and since then have thrown a variety of garden waste, generally hedgerow clippings and small branches at it. It's chewed through everything and given me a useful material for scattering between my raised beds. It's eaten a whole buddleia which was very satisfying. It's annoying having such a small opening to feed debris into, when you know the machine will chew up something, but doesn't take away from the satisfaction of your garden waste being reduced in size. I was sceptical about garden shredders after reading a few articles online, but this seems to do the job.

Works like magic
I bought this Garden Shredder a week ago to shred a rhododendron. It worked! Chopped up the thick branches up to 25mm in width without complaint from the motor and as long as you adjust the gap for thinner pieces it works well. It is effortless, you just feed the stem into the opening and it pulls it through. 2m stems with branches just get pulled into the rotating cutter and disappear like magic. It’s safe, with safety switches ensuring you can’t remove the container while the power is connected. It while rained while we used it so we just wheeled it under cover and kept going. We filled 5 large bags with the cuttings and used them as the base for a new raised bed. It is a bit heavy I guess because of the weight of the motor but I’d trade that for the performance and durability.

Useful Garden shredder
Bought this to replace my old one which was some 15 yrs old and the same model. Really useful for shredding upto 30mm diameter comfortably providing you don’t wedge it in. Fairly noisy but they all are

Disappointing
The shredder is certainly well built, robust and is quiet to use. It handles branches very well but leaves shredded chips a little larger than I thought it would and does not handle softer material such as Brussels sprout, cabbage and tomato stalks well at all which is a pity as these are the very items that I need to shred for the compost bins and I ended up taking these to the council recycling centre thereby making the purchase somewhat pointless. Small hard plastic wheels are not the best for uneven surfaces.

EFFICIENCY
Date 19th February 2026. I bought this in January 2026 so it has had only very limited use so far. I gave it a test run to check it was in good working order so this report is based on about two hours actual working time. It assembled easily straight from it's packaging and everything fitted together easily and worked first time around with nothing missing or damaged. I then tried shredding some reasonably well seasoned timber branches from last season- all well within it's rated capacity and I can say that it did a very good job. It then adjusted easily to cope with the smaller hedge cuttings from last year and did everything asked of it efficiently and quietly. In fact a neighbour came round to see me and immediately commented how quiet the machine was in operation. No necessity to wear ear muffs!. So after two hours of use to date I can say that I am well satisfied with it's ability. Only time will tell how well it lasts but I do have high hopes that it will continue to work well. I had no problems hauling it around my garden area - around an acre in size- and it does have a reasonable length of cable attached and I already have plenty of appropiate extension cables. Operation controls are obvious and worked without any problems

I can advise that the blue top part screws onto the black lid, so it cannot be dismantled when not in use unless these screws are removed each time.

This machine looks similar to the one sold by B and Q.I have found that it handles laurel branches effortlessly, however if there is a lot of top leaf growth it can sometimes cause blockage, resulting in having to remove the end cover to clear it Laurel leaves are slightly sticky .

The crushing action powers a rotating drum that pulls the garden waste in where it is crushed into chippings or mulch, as long as the laurel is no thicker than 42mm diameter it will be fine.

The Spear & Jackson S28ES Crushing Quiet Garden Shredder - 2800W is intended for tackling garden waste such as hardwoods and dry branches.
It is not intended for softer plant matter e.g. leaves, so is likely not suitable for your needs.

This brilliant machine will cut anything up to 6 CMS in diameter, green or brown. Just be patient with feeding material thorough the machine.
Not sure if you'll be able to feed weeds into the shedder if you can it'll deal with them as long as they are thick enough
