I used this within days of purchase. I'm so impressed with it. You have to put warm water in the tank & then a small amount of the special cleaner. I made sure I had a bucket in the sink beforehand for the dirty water too. I also love the drying only button so that you can dry the carpet afterwards, which is especially good in the colder months.

Yes, the wand is removable, and to detach it you have a release button located on the rear side, just below the carry handle in the middle of the vents, and you can clean the stairs by attaching the hand tool and hose attachment.
