About this product
The Sony 50mm F1.8 prime lens is a great choice for portraits or atmospheric everyday photography with a compact setup. Designed for Sony E-mount cameras, it pairs a fast f1.8 aperture with an aspherical element, delivering sharp, high-quality images with beautiful background bokeh that makes your subject stand out. Weighing 186g, it matches Sony's 7 series bodies, making it an ideal walk-around lens. On APS-C bodies, it provides an equivalent focal length of about 75mm, offering flattering portrait framing.
This lens is versatile across shooting situations. The f1.8 aperture performs well in low light while separating subject and background, and the aperture range extends to f22 for greater depth of field. Manual and autofocus modes give you control, while the 49mm filter thread lets you add polarisers or protective filters. It comes with a hood and cap and is built for reliable performance in varied environments. Its compact, lightweight design complements smaller camera bodies, making it a practical prime lens that enhances creative photography.

Affordable Sony 50mm f/1.8 lens praised for sharp images, great bokeh, and good portrait performance. Autofocus is often slow and noisy, which affects video use. Good value for beginners and casual photographers.

Great lens for this price
Love this lens. I can’t expect more in this price range. With my Sony A7v , this is a perfect cost effective addition for my portrait photography. It might be bit noisy when searches for the focus which can be a downside when it comes to videos.

Great value for the price
After a month of using, so far, autofocus is responsive enough great for stills. When recording videos, picture quality is really good but whenever it autofocuses, it makes a noise that can be heard when you record videos.

Lobvely light weight lens
Lovely light weight lens, works well, clear images, sharp focus, f/1.8 is fast. Focus motor is slow but for the price its very good.

Amazing lens
This is a great budget priced lens with an amazing angle of view, 50mm is close to the way the human eye views and people see things in life. It's a great lens for taking day to day snaps or movie work and other types of photography. This could be used for street photography, portraits and movie work.

Best budget lens for bokeh
The Sony FE 50mm F1.8 is arguably the best budget lens at this price point for Sony full-frame cameras. It delivers great portrait photos with beautiful background blur (bokeh) thanks to its wide f/1.8 aperture, which allows for excellent subject isolation and low-light performance. However, it does come with a trade-off — the lens produces noticeable focus noise while autofocusing. While this might not be a deal-breaker for photography, it’s less ideal for video work, where silent operation is crucial. So, while it can create great videos, I wouldn’t recommend it for video recording due to the noise. That said, for the price, it’s a fantastic lens for anyone looking to shoot sharp, vibrant portraits without breaking the bank. Overall, it’s a great value for the price and an excellent addition to any beginner or budget-conscious photographer’s kit.

Hi George,
Yes, the camera continues to focus while the shutter button is pressed and held halfway down, however, in Focus mode, AF-A cannot be selected. Focal plane phase detection AF is not supported. If you update the camera system software to Version 3.10 or higher, you will be able to use AF-A and focal plane phase detection AF.
