Essential Safety Steps for Silk Georgette and Voile
Turn Inside Out: Always iron the garment on the reverse (wrong) side to protect the delicate outer finish.
Use a Pressing Cloth: Place a clean, thin, dry cotton cloth or muslin sheet between the iron's sole plate and the silk. Never let a ceramic sole plate touch fine silk directly.
Low Heat Only: Set the iron's variable temperature control to its absolute lowest/delicate setting. High heat will scorch or melt protein-based silk fibres instantly.
Slightly Damp: Lightly mist the fabric with distilled water before pressing, or iron while the fabric is slightly damp from washing. Never iron completely dry silk with high-heat bursts.
Press, Don't Slide: Lift and stamp the iron gently across sections rather than dragging or sliding it, which can stretch or warp the lightweight, sheer weave of georgette and voile.
Consider Steaming Instead: Because georgette and voile are heavily textured or sheer, vertical steaming using the iron's vertical steam feature is often safer than direct plate-pressing

I can advise that the Tower T22008 2-in-1 Steam Iron does not have an auto off function. It will, however, turn itself off when the battery is depleted when using it in the cordless mode.

After checking with our supplier, they have advised for the Tower T22008 2-in-1 Steam Iron: ''Please be advised that the Tower T22008 Ceraglide Iron does not contain a traditional rechargeable battery as it does not hold a lengthy charge like other household appliances.
Plug the iron in, then rotate the dial and the indicator light on the body of the iron will illuminate to show the iron is heating and will turn off once it has reached the optimum temperature.
When the iron needs to reheat, place it back onto the base and the indicator light will illuminate to show it is heating up again. It only takes a few seconds for the iron to heat to the required setting in between each use.''

Yes it can be. The iron has a plug which heat iron and unit. Once hot you can remove the iron and use it on its own.
