Yes, the additional 0.9L is related the the centrifugal force placed on the liquid to stop it spilling out of the lid. If you go above the 1L mark then you risk liquid, or soup in your case, going everywhere if the lid isn't secured correctly.

I can advise the following for the Philips HR2041/01 ProBlend 1.9L Plastic Jug Blender:
The hole is needed for the air circulation. There is no way to cover the hole on the top on the lid, though as long as you don't exceed the maximum capacity of the jug, you should be okay. You can check the maximum capacity on the side of the jar.
