Are you thinking of taking up a new hobby but stuck for ideas? Why not join the ever increasing number of people in the UK taking up the search for hidden treasure.
All you need to get started is a metal detector and these handy hints from Trevor Austin, general secretary of the National Council for Metal Detecting (NCMD).
1. Do not trespass. Obtain permission before venturing on to any land.
2. Use the hobby to really enjoy the great outdoors. Appreciate your environment and explore the countryside.
3. Be patient. Some days you won’t find anything but rather than get frustrated, enjoy the process and look forward to the next time when you may make an exciting discovery.
4. Don’t treasure hunt for financial reward, do it for the excitement of finding something that perhaps hasn’t been seen for 2,000 years.
5. Be creative about where you search. Woods, riverbanks, fields, beaches and old church yards are all treasure hunting hot spots
6. Always re-cover any holes you make looking for treasure so walkers and joggers don’t twist their ankles.
7. If you do find anything of historical interest or something you are unsure of, report it to the landowner and take it along to your local museum for identification.
