Look out for the Hallmark on precious metals, as this declares their quality and authenticity.
- The Sponsor's or Maker's mark.
- The Fineness mark - indicating the purity of the precious metal content, for example 375 for gold, or 925 for silver.
- The Assay Office mark - indicating where in the UK the article was tested and marked. Currently there are 4 Assay Offices in the UK - London, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Sheffield, each with their own mark.
