Perfect games for this year’s Halloween party
Halloween is on the horizon and it’s a great excuse for throwing a family friendly Halloween party. As well as coming up with your original Halloween fancy dress ideas, and supplying some suitably spooky refreshments, you’ll want to provide some Halloween-themed party games to get everybody in the mood to enjoy themselves.
Here are our top 5 ideas to get you going:
Bobbing for Apples
Sometimes the classic games are the best. Simple to set up and endlessly entertaining to watch as well as participate in, bobbing for apples is a traditional Halloween party game that is sure to go down a storm.
Items required: 1x Bucket or large tub of water, 1x apple per player
Instructions:
- Fill a large tub or bucket with water
- Add some fresh apples without the stems
- Players take it in turns to try and retrieve an apple using only their mouth
It’s harder than it sounds as the apples bob around unpredictably in the water – just be sure to cut the stems from the apples before you play so that your players don’t have it too easy!
Pass the Pumpkin
Played in teams, this game is a race to pass small pumpkins down a line without using your hands.
Items required: 1x Small pumpkin per team of people
Instructions:
- Split your guests into equal teams of around six to eight players
- The person at the front of each team’s line places the small pumpkin under their chin
- They then need to transfer it to their nearest team member, who must also receive it under their chin – no hands allowed
- Continue to pass the pumpkin down the line in the same manner
The first team to get theirs to the end of the line wins. Don’t be too hasty, though; if you drop the pumpkin it must go back to the start of the line again.

The Eye and Spoon Race
A gruesome twist on the tried and trusted egg and spoon race, this simple game is perfect for any kids that may be in attendance.
Items required: 2x Spoons, 2x ping pong balls (decorated like an eyeball)
Instructions:
- Split your players into 2 teams
- Provide each team with a spoon and eyeball (decorated ping pong ball)
- The first player from each team must balance the eyeball on the spoon, run around a marker placed a set distance away, and go back to their team
- The spoon and eyeball is then passed onto the next person on their team and they have to run around the marker and back
- This is repeated until all the team have taken part
The first team to finish the course is the winner and in the event of a dead heat, the team that dropped the eye the least wins.
Pumpkin Bowling
Just as simple as it sounds, pumpkin bowling sees players attempt to knock down pins with small pumpkins.
Items required: 1x Small pumpkin, 4x or more bowling pins (tin cans or empty plastic bottles will substitute)
Instructions:
- Set up your pins a set distance away from where you plan to stand
- Each player then attempts to bowl over the pins with the pumpkin
- For each round, every player gets two throws and a point for every pin they manage to knock over
At the end of five rounds, the player with the most points is the winner.

Halloween Film Trivia
If your Halloween party is aimed at adults then holding a quiz based around scary movies can be a great idea.
Items required: Your own quiz questions
Instructions:
- To make your quiz questions have fun by re-watching all your favourite horror films
for research - Be sure not to make the quiz too tricky as not everyone will have the same knowledge of films
The idea is to provide fun for all so mix in plenty of questions that are guessable – for instance, how many films are there in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise? – as well as the more specialist questions.
