Five things to consider when buying a new bed
A new bed is a major purchase, so it’s important that you end up buying something that you’re going to be happy with for years to come. As with most major pieces of furniture, it pays to be prepared and do research before you race into a decision.
Here are five factors to consider before you sign on the dotted line.
1. Which style?
As you’ll soon discover, beds are available in hundreds of different shapes and styles, so try to narrow down your shortlist early on. Divan beds are good for people who would like extra storage options; however they are limited to one style. Traditional bed frames offer many different options and materials including wooden, metal, leather, upholstered, and even ones with TV’s built in.
2. Which mattress
When it comes to mattresses, the choice can seem quite daunting at first glance. Firstly check what size mattress will go with your bed base or frame. Once you have a list of ones that fit your size bed you need to select a type of mattress. Memory foam mattresses will offer more comfort than traditional sprung mattresses, however they can be more expensive. If you’re affected by allergies or asthma, a hypoallergenic latex mattress may be the way to go.
If you’ve no idea which would suit you best, head down to your local bed store and test out all of your options. Remember, you’re not obliged to buy from there just because you’ve sampled the mattresses, always check online before committing to a purchase to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere.
3. How big?
Be sure to measure your bedroom carefully before choosing the size of bed and mattress you want to go for. Although a room may physically take a particular size of bed it doesn’t mean that it will look right once it is in the room. Try and think about scale; draw yourself a diagram if it helps. You’ll want to ensure that there’s plenty of clearance around the sides of the bed once it’s in place to allow access.
4. How much?
Decide on a price range and stick to it. There are plenty of quality beds out there to suit all budgets, so don’t feel pressured into spending beyond your means. Yes, it’s important to buy a bed that’s going to last for a number of years, but with the quality of beds available for reasonable prices nowadays there’s no need to break the bank.
5. What does that mean?
Don’t get confused by the jargon associated with bed buying, especially when it comes to mattresses. Head online and do some research so you know exactly what you’re getting into before you buy. Look at the differences between continuous spring mattress and pocket sprung mattress, or micro and deep quilted mattresses. Read up in advance so that you know exactly what you’re looking for.
