Buying Guide to 3D TV

You may have enjoyed the excitement of a 3D movie at the cinema, well now this truly immersive experience is available to enjoy in your own home.

 

What is 3D TV?

3D TV brings a whole new experience to watching TV and movies in the home, by adding real depth to the image. 3D TV works by creating two pictures, which are sent independently to each eye which tricks your brain into seeing a 3D image. The result is something never experienced on a TV before, bringing a whole new level of enjoyment to blockbuster movies in the home.

Active or passive?

There are two types of 3D technology:

Passive
Much like the cinema experience, passive 3D uses polarising, non-powered glasses, which are cheap to buy and replace. This is great if you have a family, as the glasses can get broken by over enthusiastic youngsters!

Active
Uses more advanced technology, which requires the glasses to be powered to communicate directly with the TV. The TV synchronises the images with the glasses to ensure your eyes are getting the correct picture and arguably creating the most intense 3D experience at the highest resolution.

What do I need?

To enjoy the full 3D experience you will need:

*Sky 3D currently offer 3D TV as part of a subscribed package which will allow you to watch selected TV programmes in 3D.

2D or not 2D?

It's worth noting that all our 3D TVs also work as standard 2D TVs, so you can continue to watch TV programmes and DVDs as you would normally.

Many of the 3D TVs available can up-scale a programme or movie to 3D, although the result isn't quite as effective as using a 3D Blu-ray movie.

3D of the future

Many manufacturers are working on ways to produce 3D TV without the need for the 3D glasses. This technology is very complex to achieve with the naked eye and it may be a while before we can sit back and enjoy a full 3D experience without the matching eyewear!
