Buying Guide to Smart (Internet) TV
Would you like to get more from your TV? Do you want to use your TV for catch-up services like BBC iPlayer, or to view movies on demand? Would you like to organise your digital photos or download music? Then a Smart TV is for you.
What is Smart?
- The term Smart is commonly associated with mobile phones. Smart phones offer advanced applications and additional services that enhance the user experience.
- Smart TV is sometimes also referred to as Internet TV or Connected TV.
- It's a new way of obtaining more content and features using the internet to power the information, all controlled by your remote control.
Each manufacturer has its own version of this technology so you will find different brands vary the services and applications they offer.
So what do you get?
- Each of the available Smart TV devices connects to the internet via your broadband to bring you services such as BBC iPlayer. Skype*, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
- It is displayed by easy to use graphic menus, which are navigated using a normal remote control.
- Manufacturers can add additional services without any interaction from the user. This means the experience will get bigger and better as time goes on.
* The Skype service requires the addition of a camera, which is usually sold separately to the TV.
Ways to go Smart
There are a number of ways to get Smart technology on your TV:
- Buy a TV with Smart technology built in.
- Buy a Blu-ray player with Smart technology and make any HDMI enabled TV a Smart TV. This is great news if you don't want a new TV but would like to enjoy the benefits of Smart technology.
