What are cookies?

A cookie is a text file containing small amounts of information which is placed by a website within a computer or device through your web browser; the cookie is subsequently sent back to the same website by the browser.

Cookies are designed to assist your computer or device to remember something the user has done within that website e.g. remembering that the user has logged in, or which buttons have been clicked.

There are specific cookies related to knowing a user is logged in or not. These are known as authentication cookies. Authentication cookies are important for the website to know what information to show you, or if it needs to ask you to log in.

If you wish to find out more about cookies, we find this website quite helpful www.aboutcookies.org this link will open in a new window. Argos is not responsible for the content of external websites

By using the Argos website, mobile website and Apps, you are agreeing to our Privacy and Cookie policies and consent to the use of cookies and similar technologies by us and our carefully selected third party partners as described in these policies. If you do not agree to such use, please see the Managing Your Cookies section for details on how to adjust your settings.

Cookie terminology

Session cookies - only last for the duration of your browsing session on the website. Your web browser would normally delete these when you close the browser.

Persistent cookies - these last longer than the browser session e.g. if you log into a website and then return to the website some days later, the website knows who you are and displays a welcome message to you. Persistent cookies enable this to happen.

First party cookies - these are set by the domain (or sub-domain) in the web browser e.g. at Argos, our first party cookies are set by Argos.co.uk sub-domains.

Third party cookies - these are set by a different domain to the one on the website you are looking at. Third party cookies are used for a variety of reasons. These are outlined in the third party cookie section.

Our website also employs cookies and similar technologies placed by our carefully selected third party partners to help provide you with relevant advertising and manage our commercial relationship with those partners.

Third party cookies

AdGenie

Cookies adGENIE

Purpose and functionality relying on the cookie

Have you noticed that on some websites there is an advertising banner that seems to know what you have been looking at? Argos sometimes uses these banners to help you find the products you've appeared interested in. It's part of our initiative to make it as easy for you as possible to find and get what you are looking for.

We have a partnership with AdGenie who help us with this type of behavioural retargeting. The cookies related to AdGenie help us look at your browsing behaviour, e.g. which product categories and product pages you look at. This means we can make sure the banners you see on other websites are as relevant to you as possible.

No personal data is held in these cookies. Just an anonymous ID number.

You can opt out of AdGenie cookies here: http://www.youronlinechoices.com/uk/your-ad-choices this link will open in a new window. Argos is not responsible for the content of external websites

Please note that opting out of AdGenie cookies will not stop you receiving advertising banners on the internet, but it may mean the advertising you see is less relevant to you.

You can opt out of AdGenie cookies without interfering with your shopping experience on Argos channels.

Google Advertising

Cookies id, __gads
Channels Argos.co.uk
Purpose and functionality relying on the cookie

Google uses cookies, like the PREF cookie, to help personalize ads on Google properties, like Google Search, particularly when you aren't signed in to a Google account. We also use cookies for advertising we serve outside of Google. Our main advertising cookie on non-Google sites is called 'id' and it is stored in browsers under the domain doubleclick.net. We use others with names such as _drt_, FLC, NID and exchange_uid.

Sometimes a cookie may be set on the domain of the site you are visiting. In the case of our DoubleClick product, a cookie called '__gads' may be set on the domain of the site you are visiting.

Other Google properties, like YouTube, may also use the DoubleClick cookie to personalize ads. Find out more about ads and YouTube.

Google also uses various conversion cookies to help advertisers determine how many times people who click on their ads end up purchasing their products. These cookies allow Google and the advertiser to tell that you clicked the ad and later visited the advertiser site. Conversion cookies are not used by Google for interest based ad targeting and persist for a limited time only. These cookies are generally set in the googleadservices.com domain, but may also be set in the google.com/ads domain. Conversion cookie data may also be used in combination with your Google account to link conversion events across different devices you use. Only anonymous conversion cookie data is shared with advertisers.

Some of our advertising products allow other companies to send their own cookies to your browser. For example, when you visit a page that uses DoubleClick, you may find that cookies are sent to your browser by Google and also by other parties. Each publisher and advertiser may work with various technology and service providers and each of these parties may set its own cookies, though each cookie can only be read by the domain that sets it. This means that several cookies may be sent to your browser by several companies in the time it takes a single web page to load. This is how most online advertising works.

Adobe Mercado

Purpose and functionality relying on the cookie

We have a partnership with Adobe Mercado to help us understand our customers' needs better. These cookies help us identify which products sell well, and which are showing up as out of stock. This helps us to improve your customer journey by making sure we make it easy to get you to the right products by optimising their position on the website. Knowing when customers are viewing products that are out of stock means that we can better forecast demand and make sure the product you want is in stock.

Mercado lets us react quickly to poor customer experiences in product searches, allowing our in-house merchandising team to optimise the product search results displayed. Adobe Mercado is purely anonymous and is behaviour based e.g. onsite search term or category page navigated to.

Adobe SiteCatalyst and Omniture use cookies to differentiate between different users of the website and see what they are doing and what they look at on the website. These cookies enable us to take and analyse visitor information such as browser usage, the number of new visitors, the number of pages viewed per visit, responses to marketing activity, and shopping times.

This Adobe Digital Marketing Suite enables us to identify and understand the failure points in your journey through our website, as a customer. The data we collect is centred around improving the experience for you as a customer. Being able to look at this information helps us identify the sections, functionality and products on the website that are working well and are useful to you as a customer, as well as those that aren't working so well, so we can strive to improve your shopping experience. These Adobe cookies provide us with information that helps us improve the quality of the services offered to you. We continually strive to help you find and get what you want more quickly and easily.

Data collected by SiteCatalyst is only seen by the relevant teams at Argos and Adobe.

Test and Target cookies allow Argos to identify which online content and offers are most relevant to its visitors and which location on the page is the best place for them to sit. We sometimes show different versions of the page to different customers, so we can work out which page layout is best. This means we can show relevant material in a position that the customer is most likely to see it, making the browsing experience easier.

Commission Junction

Cookies S, LCLK
Channels Argos.co.uk

Purpose and functionality relying on the cookie

Argos and Argos Financial Services products are featured on several affiliate websites, such as price comparison sites or product review sites. Our relationship with these affiliates is managed through a third party called Commission Junction.

If you click onto an Argos product from a link on an affiliate site, Commission Junction will drop a cookie onto your device. This cookie stores information that allows commission junction to recognise the individual click within their system and know from which affiliate site the click was made. Commission junction log the publisher's website ID (e.g. the price comparison website ID), the publisher and the merchant where the cookie is identified by the confirmation page logic.

If, once you have clicked onto an Argos product from a link on an affiliate site, you go onto place a reservation or a home delivery order on Argos for that product, the cookie enables Commission Junction to know when a sale has been made as a result of an appearance of the product on an affiliate site. Commission Junction helps us maintain our commercial relationships with affiliates and understand how our customers are reaching their desired products on Argos channels.

The information is encrypted to ensure it cannot be tampered with. The cookie duration of this Argos tracking cookie is 14 days.

The commission junction cookie is held within the DCStorm pixel carrier.

We use a partner called 'Summit Media Ltd' who use an analytics tool called DC Storm to manage targeted digital campaigns using Google Adwords. It is a commercial relationship that uses search data from Google and measures the success of the campaigns that are launched. This then allows us to attribute marketing spend appropriately as well as developing the right campaigns that bring customers to the right section of the site.

DC Storm is a pixel carrier. That means they carry tags, cookies and other similar technologies that collect and store information on the effectiveness of these campaigns. This information is held within a 'container tag', a digital bucket.

DC Storm provides us with some web analytics data, only capturing data relevant to campaign optimisation. The data used by DCStorm allows us to perform some important campaign analysis e.g. what campaigns are most engaging and convert, therefore making searching for and finding the right product easier.

Currently, DCStorm holds the Commission Junction and AdGenie cookies. In the case of AdGenie, a cookie is used to identify when a user has viewed an advert. Please see the AdGenie section for detail on this cookie.

The data collected by DC Storm is managed by Summit Media and only seen by the relevant teams at Argos, DC Storm and Summit Media, and third parties when it carries their cookies e.g. AdGenie. The data collected is meaningless to anyone other than online marketers.

If, once you have clicked onto an Argos product from a link on an affiliate site, and you go onto receive a quote, the cookie enables us to know when a sale has been made as a result of an appearance of the product on an affiliate site. This cookie helps us maintain our commercial relationships with affiliates and understand how our customers are reaching their desired products on Argos channels.

The Doubleclick cookie is also used for behavioural retargeting. This cookie helps us look at your browsing behaviour, e.g. which products you look at. You might see the effect of the Doubleclick cookie in an advertising banner - have you noticed that on some websites there is an advertising banner that seems to know what you have been looking at? Argos sometimes uses these banners to help you find the products you've appeared interested in. Managing your cookies

You have different options to manage the cookies on your computer or device. You can change your browser settings to prevent cookies from being accepted, or, depending on which browser you are using, you might be able to receive an alert when a website is trying to place one on your browser. With most browsers you can allow first party cookies to be set but refuse third party cookies.

If you change your cookie preferences, you will still be able to browse around the site but certain functions will not be available, for example you will not be able to place a reservation or a home delivery order, set up a new account or access an existing account. Also, by not allowing cookies, some of our standard functionality will not work, for example deleting certain cookies will remove items from your trolley or sign you out of your Argos.co.uk account. Also, in the trolley icon at the top right of the web page, it may appear that you have items in your trolley, although these may actually have been deleted.

Your browsers 'help' menu should tell you how to block cookies or change your cookie settings. How you adjust your browser will depend on the browser you are using.

You can delete cookies stored in your browser by using a function in your browser. Whilst this does not mean you won't collect cookies in the future, it gives you freedom to delete your cookies after you have been online. This function is often known as 'clearing cookies'.

Clearing your cookies on one browser of one device does not automatically clear them on another. You need to clear all browsers on all channels independently.

You can find some helpful information about controlling your cookies on www.aboutcookies.org this link will open in a new window. Argos is not responsible for the content of external websites

By using the Argos website, mobile website and Apps, you are agreeing to our Privacy and cookie policies and consent to the use of cookies and similar technologies by us and our carefully selected third party partners as described in these policies. If you do not agree to such use, please adjust your settings as set out above.
