Your baby learning a new skill is very exciting, as you see them gain independence and explore the big wide world. To support their development, here are some tips to help strengthen their muscles:
Placing your child on their tummy, also known as 'tummy time' is a great exercise to help your baby build up neck, arm and leg muscles, as well as the ability to control their movement and head control.
If your baby is having 'tummy time' use toys to keep them entertained and active. The more baby moves and plays, the more muscles are developed - whilst having fun. Make sure that your baby is comfortable when on their tummy, ensuring that the surface is padded.
Using baby bouncers and swings can help muscle development, by encouraging baby to build up strength in important areas of the body.
Whilst you may be very excited to see your baby begin to crawl, don't force it. Your baby will develop at their own pace, so don't to compare to them to others, or rush their progress.
It's worth noting that there are different types of crawling, these include:
Very similar to the classic crawl, your baby will maintain straight arms and legs, looking very much like a bear!
This is when your baby stands on flat palms and knees, moving their hand opposite to the knee, and then alternates.
Keeping their belly to the ground, your baby will push themselves around, whilst still being fairly rooted.
Similar to a crab, baby will move backwards or sideways, propelling themselves with their hands.
Remember, every baby is different, with crawling progression and style being unique to them. Some babies even bypass the crawling process and go straight into standing and walking. If you do have any concerns contact your local doctor.
